Hyper-V

Hyper-V, Microsoft’s virtualization infrastructure, heats up the virtualization landscape. A quick peek into this feature in Windows Server 2008.

For using this feature, you need hardware with X64 based processor, hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware data execution protection. The terms may sound scary :-), but look at this list of supported/vendor-tested hardware.

The operating instructions look simple. Install Hyper-V (and choose the virtualizable network connections in that process), reboot, setup your virtual systems (name, memory, network, disks) and install a guest OS (from .iso, disk or image on the net). The rebooting step always stumps me though. There is an additional step to configure the operating system and integration services, which eventually allow you to mouse over to a guest OS from the host’s management console.

Looks interesting. Need to play with it a bit!
