Solaris 10 x86 install

Syndicated from a previously public website – Raju Alluri’s public posts at Sun Microsystems

Just a quick log of certain things I have done previous weekend

  • Helped installation of Solaris 10 at my engineering college (S.R.K.R.)
  • Delivered a short lecture on DTrace and Zones. Students seem to be very interested in the real life usages of these features
  • Some quick facts about the OpenSolaris initiative and how it helps students

BTW, I was very impressed by the kind of questions students asked, when I introduced the features like DTrace and Zones. Just a sample:

  • Tell me the performance hit on the system when I partition it into multiple zones
  • How can I use the DTrace feature on multiple, yet related processes
  • How long does it take to boot a zone

These are 3rd year engineering students, just completing their operating systems course. I am impressed by the curiosity in their questions.

Eyes might have widened when I talk about the performance numbers of the DTrace and Zones. It is always a good feeling answering such questions with pride!
